I was in a room with my friend E and her mom and family. It was an old house very similar to the one I grew up in. E was preparing for marriage, and there were paintings and artwork all over the walls from ancestors past. I walked up to one. It was for a couple named Ernesto and Emilia from a long time ago. There was a landscape painting of Tuscany at the top, and it was made for their anniversary. I sensed that they had a great love story. At the bottom in gold writing, there was a poem about their love and life together. I was reading it. There was something about living through long Midwest days and many other things. The text was arranged in a rainbow shape and in old-style cursive calligraphy, but it was also loose and very loopy. I took out a quill and started writing, as if I was the one writing the poem. It seemed so wrong to write on an old piece of artwork, but my writing matched perfectly and it was like it had always been there.

    Preparing Food for a Feast

I’m in my parents’ kitchen. They were just here with several other adults, but they all left for a religious feast. I am also going to the feast, but I am waiting for the food I’m brining to be done.

I have a cake in the oven that I am heating up, and I’m having trouble finding containers in which to fit all the food. There are many stacks of different sizes of plastic food storage containers all around the kitchen, and I’m trying to decide which ones will work best. While I look, I am humming a song from my favorite band to myself.

My male friend (not known to me in waking life) is also a party guest and waiting for me; he is sitting in an armchair nearby and playing on his phone. He is wearing an Indian style sari.

While looking in the oven, I realize there is a large square piece of foam filling the bottom of the oven. I think it is the inside of a dog bed that someone put in there to dry it out. I hope that chemicals did not leach out of the bed and into the food.

I feel a little nervous, like I want to make a good impression, and I want things to be perfect. But I know that the things I’m bringing (the food) is good.
